Flat Roofing Materials You Can Walk On

It is advisable that only professionals walk on flat roofs that weren’t built for recreational purposes, but these types of roofing systems are generally safe to walk on. They include:

  • Polyurethane
  • Single Ply
  • Rubberized
  • Asphalt
  • Gravel-topped

If you are interested in a roof that can be used for recreational purposes or heavy foot traffic, these roofing systems can potentially be utilized. It is important to work with a contractor who understands these types of roofs to ensure you can enjoy your rooftop safely.

Types of Flat Roofs You Shouldn’t Walk On

There are types of flat roofs you should never walk on. Safety and roof damage are the risks you run into with walking on certain types of flat roofing. These include:

  • Glass Plastic Fiberglass- This type of flat roofing system has the benefit of withstanding harsh temperatures and chemicals; however, it is not great for large commercial structures. Heavy foot traffic on these types of roofs can cause the roof to fall in.
  • Metal flat roofing- While flat metal roofing can be an excellent and efficient roofing option, these types of roofs do not stand up well to foot traffic. The added weight can cause the panels to bulge or puncture, resulting in leaks and water damage.
